Fresh plants of Riccia nigerica were extrated using acetone. Fractions were obtained through column chromotography. The absorbance spectra of the five fractions of the extracts showed a fluctuation from 0 to 1.18 at 400 to 950 wavelength. The anti-microbial activities of the crude extracts were tested against some selected species of bacteria and fungi, thus the test extract was found to have significant inhibitory effect (>17mm) as indicated by zones of inhibition on Bacillus substilis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococus aureus, Shigella dysenterae, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus flavus and Rhizopus sp. The results of the phytochemical study outlined in this work has shown that the extract of Riccia nigerica exhibited a remarkable inhibitory effect on test organisms both bacteria and fungi.
