Abstract Detail
Gerber, D. Timothy [1], Kramer, David W. [2]. Botany in the pre-college classroom: Setting up professional development workshops for K-12 teachers. Botany for the Next Millennium (BSA. 1995) encourages the production of “activities that communicate the excitement of plant biology to students and teachers involved in K-12 education and to the general public." Many university botanists however have limited experience in working with K-12 teachers (in-service) or even their own non-major students who are interested in a K-12 science teaching (pre-service) career. Those who want to accept this challenge soon discover there is much to know about outreach to pre-service and in-service teachers. The organizers of this informational session have delivered successful workshops for K-12 teacher professional development and would like to share information with BSA members regarding their experiences. The goal is to provide a forum for those interested in working with both pre-service and in-service teachers. The organizers also invite K-12 teachers to participate in this session in keeping with our strong conviction that all teacher workshops must be planned with their input.
