The Jaltomata (Solanaceae) of Cajamarca, La Libertad, Ancash, and Lima, Peru.

The departments of Cajamarca, La Libertad, Ancash, and Lima are contiguous and run roughly north-south. The elevation is low (e.g., at or near sea-level) on the west side, and increases to the east into the Andes. Among the species of these departments corolla size varies from 8 to 60 mm across, seeds per fruit ranges from 4 to 306, corolla form is either rotate, campanulate, urceolate or tubular, and altitude ranges from sea-level to 4150 m. Species that produce copious red floral nectar grow in all four departments; red nectar is not correlated with altitude or corolla form. There are approximately 12 Jaltomata species in the department of Cajamarca, 9 in La Libertad, 6 in Ancash, and 8 in the department of Lima. There are at least 33 Jaltomata species total in these departments, 30 to 31 of which are known from only one of these departments. Thus, it seems that successful long distance dispersal must be rare. It is likely that speciation has occurred following the rare successful dispersal of seeds to new places/habitats. Nearly all of the Jaltomata species of the departments of Cajamarca, La Libertad, and Ancash were described within the last decade, or will soon be described.
