Teaching Section Wandersee, James H. [1], Clary, Renee M. [2]. A research-based model for developing an interpretive trail signage system about plants. We conducted an in-depth content analysis of an existing, exemplary, outdoor plant science signage system located along the trails of a university arboretum in the Deep South. Our benchmarked study resulted in a trail signage model comprised of 21 criteria that we think may be useful for those who wish to design or improve such an interpretive trailside signage system. We propose that our Trailside Signage Model [TSM] might also be helpful to science teachers in assessing the quality of the opportunity to learn offered by various public informal science education sites as arboreta, botanical gardens, and nature parks when making decisions about where to go on class field trips.
