Systematics Section / ASPT Oyelana, Olatunji [1]. Evolutionary status and the degree of species divergence in the genus Solanum L. (Solanaceae) in West Africa. Solanum L. consists of closely related species freely exchanging genes and transcending frontiers of few supposedly hostile environment of West African landscape. Species diversity and evolution were dynamic and hence the need for constant biosystematic review of the genus. Six accessions were recognised in the West African species: i. represented by S. erianthum L. with regular meiosis, 2n=24, 67.2% pollen fertility, primitive features, possible intergeneric cross with Datura L., mostly trees, perennial, compound dichasium inflorescence, hairy elliptic leaf, rainforest habitat; ii. S. torvum SW. and related species, regular meiosis, 2n=24, 97.2% pollen fertility, reduction in height and woodiness, perennial, compound dichasium inflorescence, hairy ovate leaf- lobed with spines, rainforest habitat; iii. S. aethiopicum L. and allied species, irregular meiosis, 2n=24, 84% pollen fertility, shrubs, mostly annual, simple dichasium (cyme) inflorescence, dentate leaf-shallowly lobed in rainforest and savanna; iv. S. melongena L. and allied species, irregular meiosis, 2n=24 with few analogous chromosomes, 58% pollen fertility, raceme inflorescence, mostly annual, ovate leaf-moderately lobed in rainforest and savanna; v. S. macrocarpon L. related species with irregular meiosis, 2n=24, 48% pollen fertility, procumbent, rosette-like herbs, glabrous leaf in rainforest and savanna; vi. represented by S. nigrum complex, regular meiosis, 75% pollen fertility, 2n=48, shrub, serrated to entire leaf in rainforest, savanna and arid zones. In this study species phylogenetic status was assessed by one or combination of characters involving reduction and/or loss of parts, change in growth habit and ploidy level.
