What works for me: Undergraduate perspectives on professional development.

This interactive session will be led by undergraduates and is designed to explore successful approaches to professional involvement and growth as seen from students’ perspectives. The discussion will focus on a wide range of issues related to research, including: 1) selecting and interacting with a faculty mentor, 2) identifying a research topic, 3) working in a research team, 4) good record keeping, 5) applying for funding, 6) attending and presenting at professional meetings, 7) publishing results, and 8) networking within the scientific community. Approaches will be examined in selecting and succeeding in a graduate program that is appropriate for the interests and career goals of each student. Opportunities and experiences that enhance professional skills through extracurricular involvement, especially serving in leadership roles within your academic institution, will be discussed. Students and educators at all academic levels are encouraged to attend, listen, and join in the dialogue.
